Got in a couple of Celtic kits from PSI and I knew just the wood to use. A while ago, I picked up a piece of mystery lumber from a friend's farm near Red Boiling Springs, TN and it tuned out to be poplar. I have no idea how old it is, probably at least the middle of the 1900's. Even though the exterior has oxidized and is brown, inside it's GREEN. Through and through. The right-hand piece has some BLO on the cut side to show the character.

I really don't like the green "crystal" on the Celtic's cap, so I turned a button from the wood and replaced it.

Turned into a nice Irish pen. Best of all, it's already sold.

That pen looks great, the green really works on that one. I have hunted in red boiling springs, beautiful country there. Congrats in the sale too.

Really nice pen. One thing, though, is that poplar, like other words, will change as it ages. The green poplar will eventually become brown as it did on the outside of the blank.
