Hello everyone. Found this site while looking for blanks or information on how to build a pine cone pen blank. Looks like a very informative site with lots of awesomen pen displayed.

I started out furniture building a few years ago and recently tried turning while working on a furniture piece. I guess the rest is typical. Really enjoy turning, although I'm currently not doing anything (13 stitches in tip of thumb with a table saw).

Anyway, great site and looking forward to participating.

Hello and Welcome. I am not far, from Gastonia, NC, but also new to pen turning. Sorry to hear about your accident, but I guess it could have been worse. I hope there is no permanent damage. One of the things that attracts me to turning is that you are holding the sharp instrument in your hands, while with many power tools the sharp cutters are whizzing at high speed while you pass your wood and hands by it. I am not saying lathes are accident proof, but they do seem to me to be safer to work with than most of my other shop tools. Looking forward to seeing some of your pens.

Join in the fun here and while you are healing, I am including some good reading to get you up to speed on pen turning.

Below are links to three threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. While confusing to new turners, it sure helps abbreviate a lot of repetitive typing.
