Hey guys, just getting the feel of the community. I am 17 and been lathing for a couple of years now. I have two lathes, both Jet. One of them is a mini lathe and the other is an awesome full sized one, don't know the model but I can turn up to 14 inch bowls on it which is good enough for me. I have recently been experimenting on Segmented pens on Jr. Gentleman 2 pen kits cause that's the best i can afford. If anyone has some suggestions for cool things to experiment with on pens or where i can get good quality pen kits for cheap, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

Welcome Jon! You are off to a great start and I can tell that you have some turning experience already too! Do a search for "Segments" or "segmented" and look at the great pictures that come up! Lots of ideas.

I am including links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. While confusing to new turners, it sure helps abbreviate a lot of repetitive typing.

welcome aboard, and a big congrats to your folks for spelling your name right!

best buy on kits is to watch for the group purchases...always get enough participants to make the highest discounts from CSUSA or other suppliers.

Welcome Jon, as for good deals on kits and other stuff. Log in often and keep an eye on all the classified threads. Including the business ones. I think most of the business around here are in name only cause ain't nobody getting rich. Group Buys are probably your best bet for saving on kits but there are some small scale suppliers that sell kits at a discount full time. Then there is all the do it yourself info you will find here. of course be careful about what you venture into in that regard because a lot of it just costs you more than buying materials outright. sort of like making a pen. they are real cheap unless you consider all the equipment you needed to make them.
