I know some people who use something similar.

As long as you know proper precaution, this can work. Ofcourse using a TimberKing will be greater but not a lot of people can afford one []

You will need a properly tuned and kept massive saw to do this properly.

I'm not sure about that thing. I use my chainsaw to cut logs into workable size and then use my bandsaw and table saw to finish it up.
