I just started my feeble attempts at pen turning and even though the results were pitiful, it was alot of fun. My only regret is not starting this hobby about 50 years earlier. I'll be looking forward to picking up some useful information on this site.

Welcome from Indiana. I am still pretty new to turning pens and this forum myself. There are a lot of good people on here and a lot of good info too. I have learned a lot in the month I have been on here. When you get a chance take a look at the library. There is a bunch of good articles to read there. Take care.

Welcome from Japan! Better late than never! It is a fun hobby and provides some income on the side. AND some make it a profession! Wide range of possibilities!

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome Larry!

Start saving those pennies you find on the streets. You'll be needing every one of them!

Hi Larry. Hope to see you at an IAP meeting in the near future. There is going to be a wood turning expo at the fairgrounds in Columbus next month, 15th and 16th I think. Central Ohio Woodturners (That's right, the COWs ) will be manning a booth for Craft Supply and doing pen turning demos. Might be a good place for you to see how much money you will have to budget to support this fantastic hobby!
