Working on finishing a blank of hard maple. Has light color and fine grain that is outstanding. Sanded to: 240, 320, 400, 600, 1000. Slick as glass; photo

. Have: CA, DIY friction polish, store bought friction polish. Your recommendations? No hurry as I want it to look good.

As an aside and I feel others will have found the same thing. The bushings on the instruction sheet show 0.480. I have gotten into the habit of measuring dimensions where the blank(s) will meet the components. Components for this kit were 0.492; stopped at 0.495 for wiggle room.

You'll find a lot of us like to TBC (turn between centers, that is a 60° live center and a 60° dead center). You can use calipers to match the barrel ends to the hardware.

I've almost completely ditched bushings for a few reasons. I use a set to turn the blank round and reasonably close to desired size. They are usually not even for the same kit I'm using, just the correct diameter to fit into the tube. Once the barrel is rounded down close to the proper diameter (within a mm or 2 for me) , I put the barrel right on the centers and turn it down to size. There are considerations if you decide to do this, but there's plenty of help here on TBC.

I'm sure you've seen a few threads about it since you've been here longer than me, though.

I used the two 60 degree centers but flared the tubes so parts were loosey-goosey. I have found that I have a number of bushings that fit the ID of the tube, not necessarily for that kit. Turn to a bit oversize and work from there. I'll post a photo later.
