It has given me quite the variety, from mostly green to mostly maroon ( it is almost purple ) and all the variations in between.

Is it heavier than wood or plastic?

These pens weigh in at about 43 grams. The kit itself weighs 33 grams. I have no idea how much weight the stone adds compared to wood or plastic, but I'm pretty sure it weighs more.

To put it mildly . . . I really enjoy stone! Everything, from hiking and finding it, to cutting it open, is absolutely amazing.
Yes, it is expensive . . . and it's been a huge learning experience, but the result is worth it!
