Very clever guy. Looks like he came up with most of the fixtures, tools, and methods needed to do a lot of that. His drawings are excellent as well. Very impressive stuff.

If you want to give this a try, get the book "woodturning Wizardry" and study it. I have a buddy who makes stuff like this and he says it's easy and repetitious. you can make your own Chinese ball tools or you can buy a nice set from Craft supply.

I've seen my buddy make the stuff and it is all in the fixturing. Fix it to the lathe correctly and you will have no catches and it will come easily in time.
