    Casting snake skin

I am having trouble with casting snake skins. I'm using Alumilite and the casting is clear and turns out good, but for some reason spots on the snake skin are white or foggy looking. I am using CA medium and I was putting the blanks in the casting shortly after. But, later studying I found the...

    Casting "live" Flowers and Leaves

I've been toying around with the idea of casting some of our beautiful Vermont fall foliage into blanks by utilizing some small colorful leaves or in some cases some truly unique wild flowers of the region. I'm new to some of the more unique casting processes, so I have several questions...

    Casting labels in finials

I've got a question for those with more label casting experience than me, but first a bit of background. Often on capped pens, I'll punch out the metal finial and then use some left over blank to turn a replacement. I'll do this with both wood and PR/Alumilite/AA. I've been asked if it's...

    casting carbon fiber

I am tryng to cast some carbon fiber blanks for the virage kit. Using 0.5 inch carbon/fiberglass biaxial sleeves from Soller Composites. My problem is getting the carbon fiber tight enough at the ends so it doesn't come through when I turn down to the bushings. Any suggestions?

Labels & Decals Wrapping Pen Tubes

Hey guys! I've been a member here for a while but I rarely post. I was wondering what method you all use to wrap items around the pen tube. I have seen the "We the People" blanks and I want to do something similar to that with reproduced confederate bank notes I recently picked up. The paper is...

    Painting and aluminum foil

I would like to make some blanks with aluminum foil wrapped around the tube (possibly slightly crinkled or with a design), paint the foil, seal the foil?, glue "something" to the foil, and cast it in PR. My questions are primarily what glue(s) to use, what kind of paint, and what to seal the...

SILMAR 41 -Can it go bad?

I purchased a gallon of Silmar 41 this past summer and it worked great for a while. Lately it just won't solidify. It takes days to get semi-solid. I'm sure I'm using the right proportions with the hardener. My garage is about 60 degrees but I poured and taken it inside and it still won't...

    Thank You Wood-N-Whimsies

I used the Gift Certificate I won from Wood-N-Whimsies, during the Birthday Bash, to buy a couple Resin Miser molds. I poured up my first set of pen blanks yesterday evening. These are variations on the Sewing Themed pen I did for the casting contest In the 2013 Birthday Bash. I cast that...

    I'm Addicted

This hobby is far too addictive. I decided to venture away from wood and try my hand at casting PR. I'm hooked. Ordered the skin from eBay and my first pen from it is already sold. Luckily, the addiction/hobby pays for itself.

you're all a bad influence on me.

I'm kidding of course. I was perfectly happy with slimlines. then cigars, then fountain pens, then segmenting, then casting. NOW THIS. what happened. so this is my first venture into "steampunk" since it was a first and I was down to only 2 kits and I didn't want to ruin a fountain pen I...

    Casting Snake Skin Question

What kind of prep is needed to snake skin to cast it in PR? Is just clean and dry sufficient, or does it need to be tanned. If being tanned isn't needed, does it cause problems if it is already tanned? Thanks

Casting my first blanks: need help!

I just cast my first blanks using silmar 41. I left them under ~45psi for over 24hrs and the outside of the blanks are still soft and tacky! I used 8-9 drops of cat per 3oz of resin. I used mica powders for pigmentation. They also shrunk A LOT! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
