Looks like I done it backwards. I signed up, did a little reading, made a few posts, and then found the Introductions Page.

I'm new to turning pens, and turning in general. Turned a wooden funnel (a bowl with a hole at the bottom, went to far) back in my school days in Shop class.

After that, didn't touch a lathe until June 2009, when I got one as a gift, complete with pen mandrel.

I started turning pens in September of the same year, and I guess you could say I'm Cyber taught (so far, learned everything online, Youtube, forums, and finally IAP)

I turned my first pen, and was hooked... I had to learn more about finishing, and then got bored with just doing one type of pen...

It's become my addiction, I find myself staying up late at night, turning away in the garage.

Welcome Scott from the State of ME. I got my basic lathe skills from my step dad, but I was mostly self taught as well. You will find plenty of knowledge here that's for sure.

Hi Scott. Welcome from sunny southern California.

You might want to start at this link for more on the IAP Site:

This link is - a PDF document on the acronyms used here on the IAP site. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Below are links to threads/articles that have some information on pen turning.
First is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

This link has postings by different pen turners on what they wish they had known earlier:

Welcome from Ohio Scott. It's amazing how many times words like "Hooked"and "Addiction" are used in the introduction forum? We all know exactly what you are talking about. IMHO, Penturning is one of the most relaxing, challenging and satisfying activities a person can be involved in.
