Hi everybody, I'm a new member, total rookie, soon to be major pest. I'm a 60 year old(young??) retired guy from Las Vegas. Decided I needed a new hobby. I used to sit in front of my computer 6-8 hours a day and recently noticed my seat was getting bigger and bigger. And I'm not talking about my chair! I started looking on the web and thought I had decided on how to get started in this hobby. Then I found all you wonderful and helpful turners.I had decided on a Jet 1014VS, until I read the review on the Delta by John Carlisle. I'm now undecided. Since joining IAP, I have more questions than answers. I hope I can count on you to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Welcome aboard. I'll be headed to your neck of the woods in a few days. I'd recommend you peruse the library for a bit and read some of the tutorials... Lots of great info there. As for questions, ask away!

Welcome to the group. There is lots of help here and get ready to spend your life savings... I have a Jet1014 and love it. VS is a nice feature but at the time cash was (and still is) limited.

Welcome from Wisconsin!

It's less about the lathe you have and more about getting started. Either the Jet or the Delta will be a good lathe. After you make a few pens you will be able to ask more informed questions and your learning process will be easier.

Welcome from Tulsa, OK. Pen turning is a great way to get into the vortex. Check out turning clubs in your area many of the members will help you. Check for used lathes and tools on Craigslist. I bought several tools for less than half price and also got a lot of tooling with them. Buy the largest lathe money and space will allow. Bowls and other items are great fun also. Ask questions here there is a great wealth of knowledge waiting to help you in the AIP.

Welcome Bob to a very addictive but, at times, a very satisfying pastime. I have the Jet 2012 manual lathe which has a similar footprint to its smaller brother but it enables me to destroy much larger bowls up to 12" diameter. It is a very well made piece of kit and I am sure the 1014 is just as well made. The only reservation I have about the vs is that it is a rheostat system and torque may suffer under heavy load which is not a problem for turning pens but could be for big imbalanced bowl blanks. I know that changing belt speeds can be fiddly but you get used to it and after all most of us are not in a production process. Anyway whatever you get enjoy yourself!!

Welcome Bob! You've only just begun. Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

This link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome Bob. I can't really help you on your lathe choice (never had either). To add to choices, I have a Rikon 70-100 (as several others here) and really like it.

Welcome, Bob! I've got the jet 1014VS, and am tickled with it. I also have two Delta midi lathes, one set up strictly for applying CA finishes, and the other set up as a dedicated 3wheel buffer. Since I've got the buffer and finish lathes available for the real low speed functions, I'm able to keep my Jetvs in the high range for turning/sanding and only need to change the belt when drilling. Hey, may have to add a fourth lathe in order to have a dedicated drilling lathe!! Wonder if SWMBO will sign off on that?

WELCOME SIR!!!! I can relate to part about sitting in front of the computer
and the seat getting wider. lol I've been turning about 6 weeks now and have
found I'm spending more time in the garage either turning a pen or throwing junk
out to make more room and I've lost roughly 10 lbs.
Again Welcome from Florida and ask all the questions you need to ask.

Welcome from California into the deep vortex money pit...I mean Pen turning hobby its all the same. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, there is never a dumb question as long as it is being asked. I would suggest take the time to read through the What I wish I knew Article that is posted a few post back.

Hello, Bob
I am a newbie and I don't even have the lathe yet, but I can tell you this much that this site is like a big family just not living in the same town, and I love it that some of th veterans are so true when they give their opinions on you pen creation. Just like your big brother telling you how not to get hurt. But, beware that this is highly addictive. Hope that you won't say that we didn't tell you. But, and a big Butt, it's better youspend your time and your money on this type of hobby and admire your creation than going down to the neigborhood bar and listening to nonsenses of the others aand spening it on the booze, so, a big welcome form s. Texas.
BTW, the trade off here for you is that you have to teach us the tricks so when we come to las vegas and go gambling we will win more money and come here and spend it on those beautiful pens.

Thank You Scratch,Ryan,Phillip and Butch

Scratch, I'm glad your enjoying turning and it's always good to lose a few Lbs. I lost 6 lbs. just cleaning my shop in preparation to start turning.

Ryan, thanks for the advice. That article was the first one I read. Thanks to all the tuners who made that possible. The next article I read was the acronym list. I had to, just so I knew what people were talking about.

Phillip, I can relate, my lathe is due in on Friday or Monday, I can't wait. And I've already become addicted just by reading the forums. The trick to wining in Las Vegas is to stay out of the casinos.

Butch, I've read many of your posts. there isn't a question that's asked that you don't have a clear and logical answer for. From reading a lot of your posts, I know you can convince your beautiful lady of just about anything, but how did you get her to move to New Jersey!!!

Bob, remeber what I said about being addictive, well from what i have seen touring some of the guys, shop here in TX, these guys have lots of money tied up in this in blanks and kits, and some of them are not even turned, tso the logic tells me that we have to win in Casinos to fund the hobby we just picked up, or seek butches advise as how to convience our other better halves to our addictions? I know this is the only thing that we didn't get the Tax releif on from the administration. and, there ain't no Sitimulus funds alocated for it yet.
