As my move date (from CO to CA) approaches, I'm in a bind. I haven't been able to sell the Explorer.

So it looks like I'll need to keep the Explorer as well as the Saab. That means instead of renting a big truck, I need to rent a smaller box trailer for the Explorer to pull.

Or not.

U-Haul doesn't rent trailers to Explorer owners! Apparently early on in the SUV craze, clueless people who thought their Explorers could do everything had self-imposed problems and sued U-Haul. U-Haul, in response, stopped dealing with Explorer owners. Even though today those self-imposed problem people now own other SUVs, U-Haul still won't rent to me. But they'll rent to those guys/gals.

For crying out loud. Now I may be renting a truck, towing the Saab, and having the wife drive the Explorer. Insane.

Given how litigious things are here, I'm surprised that that hasn't been challenged as discriminatory. Only a matter of time I guess...

I take it you have scoured craigs list for a trailer?
Yeah, but nothing I can afford compared to the cost of a rental. Yeah, I could sell it when I get to Cali, but I need every penny right now.

I hate this crap. I have $1300 cash to my name. That's why it was so important to sell the Explorer.

Sorry about the trailer issue. Where in California?
South... Anaheim or thereabouts. Someplace within reach of my in-laws. My wife is convinced we can get an apartment. Me, not so much. We should be leaving Friday and I still don't know where we're going. Ugh.

(Happy wife, happy life. Happy wife, happy life. Happy wife, happy life.)

You could send the explorer and or Saab with a transporter to your new location and continue with the original plans. Not too expensive, ie: Fla to Ct is around 450.00. Check with some auto transporters in your area. Or, let your wife drive.

Closer to a grand a car when I looked into it a while back. I wanted to bring my FIL's old Ford truck here and start restoring it.

Don,

Sorry I don't have any fixes but I too experienced this back in 1998 as I was moving.

Really sucked and changed my plans back then also. This lack of rental has been around at least since then.....It is not new and no lawsuits have been filed as of yet for discrimination so I don't think any will be......

I realize my words are not gonna be encouraging, but what a royal PITA. That really ticks me off just hearing about that. what a bunch of nimwhits.

I would just go to another u-haul place and don't tell them what kind of vehicle you are towing with this time (or just tell them something different)... have someone pic it up for you if at all possible so they don't see that you have an explorer. I'm with the others in thinking that this is discrimination and completely illegal. If the stats show that women wreck more u-haul trucks than men, can they refuse to rent to women?

Rent the truck, tow the explorer and pack it full. Double check the tire pressure and have the wife follow. Crash with the inlaws until you get an apartment, no matter what the wife says.

Problem solved

Moving sucks, plain and simple.

be specific about your dropoff location if you do rent a u-haul... i rented one a few years back in ottawa, and when asked where i was planning on dropping it i said "Toronto, Actually, Aurora" and the girl told me it didnt matter really, they just wanted a rough idea of the mileage... LIES! after the person finally showed up at the drop off location (an hour late because she was getting coffee) she told me id have to pay a fee of 70 bucks or something insane like that (it was almost as much as the rental cost) because the form said it was supposed to be returned to location number such and such... that location turned out to be way out in the west end of toronto... needless to say i told the woman in Aurora to politely get lost, give me my paperwork back and ill be on my way. that night in a horrible rain/snow/other crap that falls from the sky storm i drove it all the way out there and the u-haul person there told me they never ever charge that "fee" but some places do it if they dont want to store the trailer... now, as a general rule i avoid u-haul like the plague...

one more thing, check the lights! when i picked up my rental the yard guy that hooked me up said my trailer harness was wired backwards and my turn signals were reversed. harness was fine, i wired it, and its not rocket science... he some how had trouble believing me even though the harness on the trailer had clearly been cut and spliced the other way around. all round it was a horrible experience.

Found out it's the in-laws who don't want us there.

Me: So why are we going again?
SWMBO: Because they need us!
Me: But they don't want us...
SWMBO: Doesn't matter, *I* know they need us.

Sigh.

Respectfully to you, your wife and your situation......I have in law issues too man, I know how nasty it can all get. However your leaving Colorado for Anaheim California and your in laws dont want you there!?! You have no where to stay and $1,300 to your name!?! This my friend is a recipe for disaster! Maybe she who must be obeyed needs to accept that Mom and Dad are adults and can make there own decisions before you guys ruin yourselves financially and destroy your marriage. My wife and I moved to Alaska with very little money but we had a common goal, a place to stay and a job lined up..........it was still very difficult. I'm sorry if this seems abrupt but sugar coating my opinion would not be helpful to you, I assumed by posting this you were at least in part looking for some helpful and honest answers?

Is there a way she could feel she was helping more form Colorado? Could she do an extended visit to help her folks out temporarily? Some times the creator puts obstacles in our way so we rethink our chosen path..........

PS What Tracy and I did was get a tow bar for my tracker. We loaded her jeep grand Cherokee and my tracker as full as we could then towed the tracker with the jeep, worked great. You just have to be sure the drive shaft is disconnected in a automatic or it's in neutral for a stick. I have seen lots of RV's towing Subaru's and other small cars this way shouldn't be an issue for your explorer. It dose mean traveling with next to nothing but that is the cheapest way to do it. I hope you guys are campers because $1,300 wont even get you an apartment.

I've been putting the word out and may have a place to land. It's in Riverside (meh) but cheap/free.

That will make my week if it works out!

I bought trailers in Co. and Texas , hauled stuff back to calif. and sold the trailer for more than I paided for it from the manuf. Doubled my money on a car hauler. Paid $1140 , pulled it here and sold it within a week for $2300
