We heard a noise, like heavy furniture sliding across the deck last night. Did'nt last long. So, go to sleep, investigate tomorrow (Saturday).

When I got up, after my first cup of coffee, threw on some clothes and checked the outside. Didn't take long!!

OUCH< that left a mark!!!!

What we heard was the tree bouncing off the roof and landing behind the house, obliterating the deck. Looking from the back toward the house, I saw a "Saturday job" had developed:

AS you may realize, Dawn and I rarely see the house--we spend seven days a week at the office, so I don't really "plan" home maintenance time--this project could not wait, the wind was NOT that strong last night, so a HEAVY wind could have shifted the tree into our dining room---

My 16 inch, 35 year old chainsaw seemed overmatched, so I got a nice new, 20 inch and accomplished a lot, working alone. Here is the scene Saturday afternoon, when I quit for the day:

Of course, there is a pile of crotch, potential burl and other "maybe pen blanks"--you may hear about that in the next few months!!

No real harm done, just changed my "Saturday at the office making the weekly email" into "Saturday at the house, weakly tree trimming!!!!

The email WILL go out tomorrow and the tree will be finished. Anyone in the area (Sturtevant, WI) need firewood???

Something like that is always so much fun to wake up to. :frown::frown::frown:
Last time I had that much fun was in '08 when Ike visited us.

At least you heard it happen. I had the same thing happen in the front of my house and we didn't hear a thing. Those early morning surprises are not a lot of fun.

Glad it wasn't any worse. Looks like you got a good handle on it.

No one was hurt, damage was minimal, you got a new chain saw and you have a lot of wood to play with. I'd say you came out of it pretty well.

Wow.. Glad it wasn't worse. Its been really windy here too.

Please make sure to have someone fix the gutter! Water near the house causes much nastier issues!

The Geek is right. Water problems next spring will not be welcomed.
Wish I was closer.......would have enjoyed helping you cut it up.
Looks like some natural edged bowls could be in your future.
Of course, cutting the limbs down and sealing them might make for some pen blanks in Feb.

Happy it wasn't worse. Everything can be repaired.
Enjoy the new chainsaw. Remember that is part of the deductable for insurance reasons.
Plan a big new deck and have a party. We all will come.

I know the feeling - we had two 100+ year old Sugar Maple trees go down while I was watching TV (broad daylight during a thunderstorm) and I didn't hear a thing. Fortunately they both fell in the best possible direction away from the house and we had no damage.

Too bad about your deck ! . Looks like the downpipe needs to be replaced. . And a little damage to the corner on the siding and the roof edge ?

Maybe you can sell the tree bits as "historical wood" for turners, carvers and penmakers

Yep, me too!!

Just threw off my schedule for the weekend---but I'll get everything done!!:biggrin:
When it happened to me, I had about 4 people begging me to let them clean it up for the wood. I accepted the best offer which was from a guy who had equipment to push the roots back and chip out the stumps.
