What's normal "noise" from a Jet 1014vsi?

I got a jet 1014vsi at my local Woodcraft store last weekend.

I've used it about a dozen times over the past week and initially it was almost silent, just a faint whirling sound at any speed, but it's started to make a "tick-tick-tick" sound that corresponds to the rpm rate.

I've had a couple catches that have stopped the rotation of my work and resulted in a screeching sound for a split second, and once I (idiotically) turned the lathe on with the indexing bolt screwed in and got the same noise for a split second, so maybe I did something bad?

The noise definitely is coming from the motor area-- it happens regardless of which belt postion and even if I take the belt off. I thought maybe I got a wood chip down there near the shaft but I don't see anything.

Any ideas? I guess I can just press on since it seems to work fine and it's under warranty of course.

Thanks, Mitch

I have done all the stuff you have done. Mine does not make any clicking noise. Look at your belt and pulley`s. Maybe there is something in one spot on a pulley making the noise.

Check your belt, I had part of the belt come loose once and it was slapping the housing. I could see how a catch could cause this if there was a rough place on one of the pulleys.

You might check the set screw on the pulley. It could be loose and letting the pulley move around. Make sure the pulley's are lined up straight before you tighten it down.

Mine had a Tick-Tick sound also. I loosened up the set screw on the headstock wheel, pushed in in ever so slightly and secured the set screw. That fixed it. I think the washer has to be loaded before the screw is tightned.

You said it makes the clicking sound even with the belt off?? Try turning the motor pulley by hand and see if it still clicks with the belt off. If it does, something is up with the motor itself.

If not, check the grooves in the pulleys for debris... Mine did this clicking noise and there was wood chips lodged in the v groove on the motor pulley causing it.

It makes the sound with the belt off the pulleys but it does seem to be coming from the lower pulley area that's spinning with the motor.

If you turn the motor pulley by hand slowly, can you "feel" any thing like a little "catch" when you turn it?

I don't have my jet anymore to look, but I believe the pulley is a direct mount to the motor? If so, the motor has a bad spot inside... Beings you just got it last week, your local woodcraft store will probably swap the whole Lathe out...

If anything, take the Lathe and let them listen to it and check it out. The one I got mine from in tulsa was willing to do that to mine when I had other issues. Not running true...

Likely when you had the catch, your drive pulley on the motor has slipped on the keyway and is ticking against the motor housing... loosen the set screws and slip the pulley back a hair... I've had this happen on my 1442 several times until I discovered the keyway as booger up and won't handle the locking screw... Jet's warranty kicked in and fixed it.

One other possibility is you have a bad bearing in the drive shaft... a new machine shouldn't have bad bearings unless they were bad to begin with... I've changed mine (I've had my 1014 non vsi over 7 years) and it runs very quiet.

The screech sound was the belt slipping... make sure you didn't glaze the belt.

Either way, contact JET... their warranty is very good and usually no questions on fixing the machines.

Great thanks. I see on the diagram that the set screws are sunk into the drive pulley but I can't seem to see them much less get at them...sorry to be so clueless. How do I do the adjustment?

Mine has been ticking for years, keeps running just fine otherwise. I have looked it over and found nothing going on, the runout is fine, turns on and spins fine, just makes some ticking noises I hardly even notice it anymore I guess.

I took the belt and the pulley off and it sounds the same so it's the motor. It's not terribly loud and the lathe works normally otherwise. Guess I'll just live with it until I get back to Woodcraft and check it with them. Thanks everybody.
