is the name of that gadget which cuts wood blanks horizontally in a barber pole fashion. ? It mounts to the lathe and had a cutting tool that runs back and forth horizontally.

Are you refering to the router adapter that Craftsman used to (may still) sell. It used a router to cut spindles, spiraling flutes etc. Like a giant version of the pen wizard.

The Sear Craftsman "Router Crafter" is one version

Trend (in the UK) also sold it. I don't think they sell them anymore, but you used to be able to find a manual on their site.

I have a printed copy of the manual somewhere...I also have 2 of the units.

I don't know if the Sears is the same thing as the Beall -- Beall claims to be the inventor of the one he sells.

I think I would be hard pressed to turn a pen on a router crafter - much too big! Penguin have you tried it oin the router crafter? I have mad a lot of spindles on mine but never anything that small!

to be clear, I should have quoted mredburn. a Router Crafter is not the same as a pen wizard, but I would say they are similar in principle.

here's video of a Router Crafter in use:

now that I've thought about it - jrgrden may be asking about a fluting jig like PSI sells:

I own them, but have never used them. One came with a radial arm saw I bought, the other came with a Jet mini lathe a bought.

After reading and watching, it looks like the Beall is the guy I need to pursue. The purpose s to carve in a spindle style, a pen body.
Thank you for jumping in. You helped a great deal.
John
