I made a WS a couple months ago, and the barrel came up a smidget short. Without looking at it close or thinking about it much, I assumed it was my fault. So I tapered the end and made it the pen I carried. It looks Sweet, but was a minor error I wouldn't sell. I made a few that are fine after that. Then the last one I made, again the turned blank had a gap between it and the lower section, because the insides wouldn't go in any farther without wedging and making it not usable. If anything, I left a tad bit beyond the barrel end. With this problem, I could have left maybe 4mm more and it would have been fine. Seems to me, my job is to cut it to match the brass sleeve, but now I have to test them Long and cut them back until they fit. It's like the silver barrel the refill fits in was made to long, and I can't do anything about that.

I'll add a picture in a bit, but wondered if anyone else ever had this problem with a WS III ?

Also, in the past month, from WoodCraft, I one time came up with a piece not in my kit and another time an entirely WRONG piece. That's discouraging. Guess I need to inventory them AT the store?

HAPPY EASTER
RW

I've seen 2 different length transmission tubes in "Sierra" style pens - 2.37" & 2.72" - could be Woodcraft stuck the wrong size transmission in with the nib? I don't know that transmissions are even identical from a single vendor/manufacturer: I bought several chrome Sierras from Lee Valley and transmission lengths are mixed (IIRC, LV kits are made by/for Berea).

Edit to add: tip-to-tip length of nib section for 2.37" transmission is 2.54" -- 2.72" uses 2.18" nib section.

One more #!: tube length should be ~ 2.21" on the Sierra twist pen -- Sierra pencils use shorter tube so maybe that's how they messed up.

I notice you said WS III -- all my info is for WS IIs so could be my post is more worthless than usual anyway!

Actually I do both II and III, and your reply is helpful. I'll pull out my caliper and start measuring. I think the way to do it is measure a known GOOD one and see how they differ.

Thanks Jim

Standard Sierra lenght tubes should be the same for the twist pen and the WS III (Sierra Vista). Difference is the diamter at the ends.

Sierra is top actuated and the tube attached to the top finial runs the transmission. There is normally a wide range of distances that will successfully operate the twist transmission.

Take a look at the finial tube and the transmission -- that is where this pen style comes together.

The wall street III is the sierra vista from Berea Hardwoods and Woodcraft does not package the parts. They come from Berea and Woodcraft sticks their label right over the Berea label.
Do a good turn daily!
