The same hooked-on-silk designer who asked me to make an opalescent hand-dyed/hand-marbled silk pen (posted here some time ago):
http://www.penturners.org/forum/f13/ill-have-silkie-side-opalescence-140706/
heard (through some grapevine that I don't know about) that I've been marbling - so she asked for a quartet of hand dyed/marbled pens - I obliged; steps:

Hand dyed 8mm initially cream-colored Habotai silk (dyed with Jacquard silk dyes, wrapped in parchment and gently steamed x 1 hour to to fix the color, then hand-washed with Synthrapol detergent, tumbled dry, ironed).
Silk run through the Xyron to apply a permanent adhesive layer on the back side.
Silk then adhered to (acetone cleaned) brass tubes, trimmed.
Silk then alum'ed (using a more concentrated solution, i.e. 1/8 cup of alum mixed into 16oz. of warm water).
Tubes dried overnight.
Marbled paintings done on methocel-thickened water (as explained in earlier posts) with Jacquard Dye-na-flow dye mixed with tiny amounts of Jacquard mica.
Alum'ing/marbling sequence repeated a second time, dried overnight.
Sealed with Judikins Diamond Glaze, dried x 24 hours.
Tube-in cast with Douglas and Sturgess Clear Casting Resin with some metal flakes and mica powder mixed in for color and texture harmony.
Turned and finished as usual:

She's happy, so I'm happy.

The technique is opening up some creative possibilities - and now she's talking about a pen/scarf/bangle combo (why not?).

Happy Sunday to all - Bob

More Beauties! Cool technique. Keep them coming Bob!
Thanks for the how to.....not that I am going to try ghes e procedures but still very interesting to know.

Wonderful technique Bob. The instructions are very nice.

The basic color patterns of the background are excellent, but I am always drawn to the gold flakes; to me they add a lot.

Thank you for sharing!

(POKE: You need to try some larger diameter kits, just because I want to see them. I think these would be beautiful in some of the JR family - Jr Anthony, Jr George, Jr Aaron, Jr Majestic, etc...)

Sincere thanks, Charlie, Mark, John and Jay!

Silk is an ideal dyeing/marbling surface: thin, thirsty for color, strong, with a minimally visible seam after marbling..

I've done some more Shibori-style silk dyeing and will soon marble it.

Stay tuned.

Always glad to show little steps.

Warm regards, Bob
