I have a jet 1014 VS with the stock tool rest. The paint has come off and I think that might be the start of the problem but not the cause of the funkyness.

The left side of the rest has developed serious gouges that are causing a rough turning experience. This only happens with the skew and the gouges are getting worse. Here is the funkyness:

There are no burs on the edge of my skew. I rubbed a paper towel on it and nothing caught. I even ran the wire wheel over the corners and edges. There is nothing on the Skew that could cause these gouges in the rest. What is going on?

Short term: Use a file and smooth the rest. It happens to all of us with those soft metal toolrests.

Long term 1: Round the corners of your skews.

Long term 2: Get a better quality toolrest. I've been wanting to get one from rherrell myself.

As Don said, just use a file on the tool rest. Every once in a while I take a flat file and run it across the tool rest a few times. It smooths it out. Rounding the edges on your tools such as the skew will help prevent the problems as well.

More time than money right now and I am strapped for time. I have the pieces to make my own rest just need to find the time. I think that is the direction I will go.

+ 1 for Rick's products & with 20% off (http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=89758) there is no better time to pick up one (or two) …

I just received my "Chriatmas Special" toolrests from Rick - really beautfully made. The brass "ring" between post and rest is a nice touch, too. I am in the middle of another woodworking project, so I have not tried them yet. (But one is mounted on the lathe, and I admire it from afar ...)

My stock tool rest, and similar aftermarket rest, were getting a little rough, and frankly, they are just plain ugly. Life is too short to use cheaply made tool rests!

The tool rest that came with my Rikon would get "sticky" every so often. I started giving it a good rub down with a Scotchbright pad every couple of hours of turning. This quick polishing made the rest nice and slick but won't get rid of nicks, that takes a file.

With that said I have changed to a modular rest from Penturners Products (johnnycnc) and love it http://penturnersproducts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=160, just ordered the longer unit for pepper mills.

All the best,
Chris

A block of wood with sandpaper, make sure the block is big enough to keep it level across the tool rest. You want to sand the top smooth and keep it level at the same time.

File the top of the crest until you can make your own or buy one from either Rick Herrell or from Penturners supply. It happens to all cast Iron tool rests.

After you have filed the rough spots down take it one step further. I then use sandpaper through 400 grit and wax it well and then it is quite slick and doesn't drag.

The best fix available.....

Rick here on the forum has the rest you need username: rherrell

This topic is actually closed/completed. But you can at least check it out....
