I have made a few hybrid pens, but kept the threaded sections resin only because I'm not sure if stabilized wood can be threaded. Can it be threaded and if so, any tips for successful threading?
Thanks, that is what I suspected but wished wasnt true. I bought a piece and cut some threads using my 10mm die. I took the threads, but wat to crumbly to trust. I've seen others make resin under sleeves
I have done threads in wood, using a single point tool on a Sherline lathe. The Sherline has a hand crank for the manual machines for threading, allowing for very small cuts at a slow rate. It also helps if you put a small amount of thin CA in inbetween every pass. The CA is absorbed into the wood and helps keep it together.
Good idea, but I don't think my Rikon has that option. I use taps and dies to cut threads. Am I missing something? I know some metal lathes can cut threads
I have never been successful in making the external threads with a die. I have been able to make the internal threads by drilling the hole and threading it while the blank is still 3/4or larger in diameter. Usually clamped in an Er 32 collet/chuck. That seemed to keep the wood from spliting as I tapped it. Certain woods would not work at all.
