I have the sorby steb center but have used a couple of nonbSorby ones and they were fine. I think one was from CSUSA.
Do a good turn daily.

I have the cheaper version sold by CSUSA (They also sell the Sorby). It works great at 1/3 the cost.

Somewhere I have read about using a cup live center & a triangular file to cut teeth in to the edge to create a cheap version of the stebcenter. If I run across the link I will post it.

????? I don't understand how you could use a cup "LIVE CENTER" as a drive center even if you file notches in the cup??

It would have to be a dead center.

The cheaper version from CSUSA is 7/8" diameter. How does this work on a 3/4" blank?

Bill, Alan Lacer advocates the use of a notched dead center for learning to use a skew on spindle turnings. It may be hard to find a dead center anymore with the advent of live centers.

Color me equally confused with that one.

It likely wouldn't. But then I don't use a stebcenter to spin a pen blank. I have a smaller fixed drive center for that. Personally, I don't see the need for a steb center for a pen blank, as there is not much spinning mass. I was under the impression that he wanted something for larger stock, but now that I read back, it does not say.

Cheers,
