It has taken a while to get all of the tools and techniques set for ring making, but the signs are go now. Ring cores, the boring bar, ring polishing cylinders and blanks have finally reached my shop. The boring tool that fits in the tailstock is a must for me. Such a difference it makes in getting a tight straight hole for the core. I'll get better.

This one is Bloodwood with six coats of thin CA as the finish.

Looks like a good start to me.

Rings are definitely on my short list of things to try in 2021. Dare I run full-speed into another deep, dark, rabbit hole?

Be sure you buy the correct boring tool. A set with the correct mt1 or mt2 that includes the cutters is best. Try eBay but scroll to find the same item cheaper.
Good luck

I too have recently begun trying my had at ring turning. Agree that the boring tool is a must have. I have made 5 rings thus far that turned out kinda sorta ok and 3 that have been total disasters. For me anyway, it is not as easy as the multitude of videos I have watched. Good luck OP in your endeavor. As for me, well I am trying to stay positive and hopefully I will get it one day.

Now that the majority of tools have arrived and been made in shop, rings are reaching the finish line. These two are a size 12-6 mm wide and a size 6-4 mm stainless steel rings cores wrapped with bloodwood.

I'd you are making a few with different internal diameters, start with the smallest and don't reset the boring tool. Be careful with the heavier cut and just enlarge a bit for the next larger size. If you make several of the same size just back off the boring tool a tiny bit and bore the next one. Slightly increase the cut to final size.

I prefer the look and feel of the 2 piece cores, as well as the inlay channel type. They are so much easier to make and you don't need any special tools.

Enjoy your choice.

When I made a two piece core ring I could have really used the boring tool to get the hole precise. It was very fussy too getting the width right too. Mine came out fine as you can see, but these single core rings are easier: drill, widen hole, glue, turn, finish and buff.

I just got a new phone n my old pictures got out on a usb stick so I can't show pictures of my 2 piece core rings. I made my mom and wife one using golden amboyna burl, aluminum, and african blackwood. I made 1 for myself with pyinma burl, aluminum, black plastic, and red amboyna burl. I don't know if I could've made them on a 1 piece.

Snowing today but I managed these anyway. I plan to make a set of many sizes of bloodwood and bocote. After that it's in the some acrylics.

The rings you all have posted are amazing! Definitely something I want to try over the coming weeks. I am glad to see the positive remarks about the boring tool, seemed like a good invested but nice to see others agree.

Best ring mandrel I've seen and I now own several I like less. I'll buy soon.

You will need a collet chuck to fit your headstock.
