I cast a blank that when I looked at it, seemed to be perfect for explaining about squaring blanks. Veterans already know this, newer pen makers might find this helpful. If you look at the first picture, you will easily notice the tube isn't even close to being straight thru the blank.

After squaring the blank, to the tube, you will notice the actual blank is extremely unsquare.

After turning to size and assembling there are no gaps in the finished pen. Point of all this is just to demonstrate the concept of squaring to the tube and that the squareness of the actual blank is inconsequential.

I recognize the Groz precision square as I have one. As I had posted on another place, I did have a teeny gap on one pen; other two were OK. Didn't want to put it back in the press and crack the blank.

I remember you mentioning a teeny gap on one pen - on another thread. Like you, I tend to remember those teeny gaps too. Pen making is one work where teeny gaps are noticeable and distracting, especially to one like me who is obsessive.

And thanks Ken for bringing this up and showing the importance of squaring. Great visuals as Mike said!

Lee, I worked in QC for a manufacturer, working down to 1/10,000ths of an inch. As I mentioned, it would be good to inspect both the blank and the various components of a pen kit. I haven't worked up the nerve or patience to try kitless pens.
