It was a small Brown Mallee burl slab laying on the shelf at Woodcraft in Louisville. No price, but I knew it would be expensive.

Perfect size to use for display or photos of either pens or some of my wife's stuff she makes.

When is going to Woodcraft (or Rockler, or The Woodworkers Shop, or name your local wood supplier here) not going to end up being a splurge - lol. I would hate to see my checking account if there was a Penn State shop near me .....

Decided to sand the saw marks out and put a nice, flat protective coating on it. Sanding went well. Back of the piece looks beautiful. First two coats on the front was very good so I decided one last coat for "protection". And there came micro bubbling in one spot.

Touch up sanding went well. Cleaned up. Re-sprayed and here came the orange peal. A couple more tries AND…

I will sand the entire top back to bare wood tomorrow and start again. 🥹

This time it will be perfect!

If you finished the front you should do the same for the back to help stave off cracking. I am a lacquer fan when it comes to exotic woods. More coats and gives it depth.
