Second bowl. Still not patient enough for these projects.

I green turned it back around Thanksgiving. Waited until Saturday to start finishing it. I'm not so good at putting on the clear finish Dad had on hand. I also had a bear of a time with tearouts which probably came from my lack of experience with pieces this large.

I, too, am just learning bowl turning. One of the things that helped me most was buying the little HF pneumatic sander. It allows me to power sand the bowl while it is turning on the lathe. Helps repair those tearouts! Before I had the air sander, I used a little cordless right-angle drill with a 2" sanding head, but the small air sander lets me get deep into bowl better.

The bowl is 5 1/3 inches across, 3 inches tall, walls are about 1/3 inch thick at the lip, thicker towards the bottom. It's from oak that I harvested at work. It's I guess an artificial burl? It's from where branches were trimmed off the tree wrong, then they grew back out over and over making a big knot. I have a large handful of pen blanks from the same harvest.

Looks good. Looks a lot better than my first bowl. Wondered why we haven't seen you posting lately. Too tied up with bowl turning?

Nah. Just had one of those never ending weeks last week. It was either work or kids or the rest of life happening. Just couldn't clear turning time when I wasn't too exhausted to move. I was also recovering from a night in a sweat lodge. A couple hours 2 or 3 feet away from 40 rocks glowing red-hot with water being thrown on them in an insulated tent will really take the fight out of ya.

I wish that I had time for 'the rest of life'. It seems like work and kids take up all of it right now, leaving no time for my wife and I to do anything else.

I'm right there, too. The rest of life usually involves bills and meetings.
