Hi Folks:

I bought a vs delta bench grinder and replaced both wheels: one with a Norton's 3x 46 grit , and the other with a D Way CBN (what a great wheel BTW). As I tighten one nut to secure a wheel the other nut loosens. I read in the in delta instructions to wedge a block of wood or something between the wheel and the wheel guard. That seems like a lot of torque to place on a thin wheel guard. I am sure I will figure it out, but I thought I would ask the greater minds.

Thank you.

Yep, but it works. It doesn't take much. The cast part, not the tool rest. The wheels just need a good snug, not cranked tight. The nuts are right hand-left hand towards tightening as the grinder runs.

I am trying to imagine how that is going to look. If it isn't a big bother, can you send a pic? I will send you my email address if you decide to send a pic. Thanks either way. I am sure I will figure it out.

Those nuts do not need to be super tight. They tighten with rotation. I would just hold the opposite wheel with a gloved hand and tighten the nut. When they tell you to use a wedge they tell you to place it between the toolrest and the wheel not the guard. Never put pressure on the side of any wheel. You run the risk of cracking them. If you ever drop one just throw it away and never use it even if it looks good. Internal crack and you will have flying debris and chance of serious injury.

Not sure about the delta but sometimes those grinders have a slot on the motor shaft that you can insert a screwdriver in to hold them still.

Agree. They don't need to be super tight. That can also crack the wheel. Just tight enough to prevent spinning on the shaft. Many wheels have a paper washer glued to each side. You just need to slightly compress that paper under the large washer. It doesn't really take much torque.
