As you've seen the pictures of, I've got a Grizzly G5979 lathe, with broken pulleys. My dad and I pulled the first with a gear puller, but the second one won't budge. We've tried pulling, WD-40ing, hammer & chiseling, blow torching (the grease will catch on fire), drilling, and Dremeling.

We've lost a drill bit, a Dremel attachment, and about four hours. Is there

ANY advice you can give? this thing won't budge at all. I've looked for disassembly guides, but they all say, "Remove the left and right pulleys..."

Thanks,
Ryan

By the way, the pulleys are the ones that move with the speed shifting lever, not those that move from the motor alone.

When I had to replace the Reeves pulley on my Jet 1236 (identical to this Grizzly), I had to use a 2-jaw gear puller. You need to be able to apply force to the shaft and pull at two points 180* apart at the same time. I could not get a 3 jaw puller to work because I could grab points 120* apart because of the housing.
Hope this helps.

In working as a mechanic when a pulley would not come off it often worked to apply heat to the pulley. It helps with seizing and the metal will release from the shaft. Use a MAP gas or propane torch and slowly heat the shaft around the entire circumference and apply pressure with a bearing puller after throughly heated Go slow and let the metal heat up gradually. It worked well 99% of the time.

Thanks for the advice.

Mannie, I've been using a 2 Jaw, but the outer part of this cast alluminum's too thin to grab, so we grinded some grooves in it.

Cindy, I used a propane torch. It probably would have been successful if...

Ed, there's got to be a set screw. I pulled on it some more. I was eccstatic that it was moving so much! Too bad the black box behind it followed. Do you have any idea where I could find it? I've seen several of these little tabs on it (pictures coming), but they don't seem to do anything.

The second picture shows a couple of these tabs.
The third picture is a nut that looks in need of removal, but I have NO clue.
The fourth is the back of the headstock, it's just a round hole, not a screw.
