I am thinking about buying a powder coating plating system and wonder if it really will extend the life of less expensive plated pen components or for that matter make the better platings last even longer? If it would you could save some money on lesser expensive pen kits vs buying the higher end platings and it would make some kits feasible that aren't available in the better platings.

What is the best unit available (not necessarily the cheapest) for powder coating pen components.

I have a large air compressor so that part is not an issue for me.

How well does clear powder coating plate over the 10KT 24KT kits?

From what I have been reading it does not look all that difficult but I have a couple of questions (albiet stupid ones).
How do you prevent the nib from plugging while you do the coating?
How or what do you clip the negative charge to? (I am presuming the
part of the component that will be concealed after assembly)
How do you protect parts that you don't want to plate ?

Where is a good place to buy a small reasonably priced oven? Does a
toaster oven really work?

I am trying to avoid spending pitfalls before I get into this.
Any info will be greatly appreciated. Is there a how to sight or
book available on this.

My main concern is if this really looks professional over exisiting
platings when using the clear?

Any advice or need to know before I buy will be really appreciated.
You can't get too much advice or information so please speak right up.

Thanks
Pipes

I'll send it to Jeff, along with everyone that I have an email for. I don't think I can send it through the email link here. If you and I have emailed directly, like some who have asked, it will be on its way in 5 minutes. If not, like Tx and Mick, drop me an email with your addy and later tonight I'll send a group email.

Here is a tutorial done by a friend. I thought I posted it earlier today. This article tells all you need to know with pictures.
Powder Coating: http://tinyurl.com/h3ow9

I purchased a large toaster oven from Goodwill for $5 and it was basically new and is still working.

The parts have to be placed on a metal jig and the elec lead is attached to the jig...there are pictures in the article referenced above. Tape over the pen part shoulders keeps the powder off. If the nib hole plugged, I drilled it out or plugged it with a small wooden tapered dowel/plug.

The HF powder coating system which is on sale often for $59-$69 is the same as the one Caswell Coatings sells (look at them both) and is much cheaper.

Only 5-10psi or so of pressure is needed, so a larger compressor is not essential and the powder spraying is over in just a few seconds so not much air volume is required.

The above article tells it all. MOre later...My wife is offering to take me out for a birthday dinner...talk with you guys later.

I have powdercoated gold kits and it does quite well. The slimlines with black stripe clips pose a problem as does any parts with painted detail: the painted black stripe crinkles from the heat of the oven. Actually, I've decided it's just as efficient to purchase TiAu plated kits and not try to PC with clear. I purchase the cheap plating, buff it off to the chrome color underneath and PC the parts with colors. I use powdercoating for the bullet casing pens only these days. Its kinda like snake skins....its cheaper and much better quaility for me to purchase the skins than hunt the snakes, skin them and cure the skins myself. The chemicals are expensive. Likewise, the powders are not cheap, although not real expensive, but powdercoating is a little time consuming. Preparing kit parts for coating??? I still thing the titanium gold kits are much more cost effective and ...she's leaving out the door. Later guys[:D]
Ok, I am sending it to Jeff, Billy, JimGo, Dario and Ed. Others I do not have a private email for. Sometime this evening I will send another group email if needed.

My thanks as well. I printed the one that Don posted earlier. If they are the same, at least I now have an electronic version as well. If not, I have double the information.

Yes, it is the same as the yahoo site tutorial. I didn't even notice your link was to that info.

Use William's link...it works!
Don, this is likely the same pdf I have from the Yahoo site, but your link will not open for me.

I'm waiting for confirmation from the author that it's ok to post, but I did upload it to the library. Before I post it, I'd like to either give him the opportunity to correct a couple of things, or send me the source so I can fix some typos. I think he'd want it to be corrected if a zillion people are going to see it. Here's the link...

I am sure that Jeff won't mind, but I created a turorial that is posted at the Penshop:

It should answer most of your questions Pipes. Clear goes over the gold without issue. So does all of the other colors. I have done black over gold too.
