Platter goes Bang, Pop!

I found out why there is a lack of examples of turners that turn the log cutoffs (I call pucks). I got it turned and it looked ok. Had some grain pullout and tried to use some Shellac to help stabilize that.
I picked it up to look at it and all of a sudden while I was holding it......
Bang, Pop!

Gotta get rid of the pith, it's the source of cracks.

Yup, outside shrinks faster than the inside. Stress gotta go somewhere. The shape that stands the best chance of surviving is a deep conical shape with a small base. Then you are leaving space for shrinkage to happen.
