O.K. I looked at it abain.
At first glance I thought buttons,but the ceners are not "machined"How about antler ends?That might go with the fact te main part looks like the inner core of a stabilized antler,but the holes surrounding them are not symmetrical.
Possibly twigs set with rubberized CA?
Baking soda and twigs ,CA around the tube?

The upper barrel was a leftover from a long time ago, the lower barrel of that pen blew up from being dried too quickly in the microwave. The color of the arbor vitae seemed to match the peppercorn color OK so I made use of it.
It looks about as expected, thought the salt might be more transparent and sparkly. You can always chew on it if you forget the salt and pepper on a picnic.

Just a thought I had and a weird one...
If you subbed out the peppercorns and used Habnero seeds instead, that'd be a seller to some chiliheads! Might even have an marketing angle in the chilihead magazine.
