Hi to the group, I'm out of the closet. I've been reading and studying the forums the last few weeks. I'm a snow bird in Panama City Beach Fl. and was introduced to pen and bowl turning at the local senior center. I have my mandrel and several kits and will be turning my first pen tomorrow morning. I have a 7x12 Cummins metal lathe at home in Mishawaka, In. and will be using that once I get home in April. I did see the tool rest available for my lathe from Little Machine Shop, so I'll be ordering one of them. I've really enjoyed the information that I have found here. I think my learning curve will be shorter because of this forum. Thanks to all of you for the questions and answers that I don't have to ask now.

Tom

Welcome from the Natural State. Looks like its too late to back out now.
When you get back home ,if you can't find a local pen club you might want to check out AAW. I am in two AAW clubs and the wealth of knowledge is endless.

Welcome and enjoy the madness here. You probably have read much of the information below but to get started, I will include it anyway.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
