Got a catalog from ----- showing their new Orion pen kit. It shows the pen clip to have the nice BLACK shield on the clip. Makes the kit look nice as it coincides with the other black design on the tip area. I ordered two of them and both clips were ALL gold, no black shield as the catalog shows. Got an e-mail promotion with the special 5 sale, and it shows the black shield on the clip. I was going to order 5 more but wanted to make sure I got the black clips. I called about it and the person on the phone said the clips are all gold and no black clip. The black part (the shield) is just a reflection in the picture. Have you ever heard of a reflection being just a shield spot on a clip? Have you heard of a supplier letting a picture in their catalog and the e-mail sales pitch go forward without reviewing the picture first, mis-representing their product. I just wanted to give people an update to ask questions first if the black shield shown makes a difference in your pen kit choice. I ordered 5 of the different kits instead as I like their service, their shipping choice, their selection choices. Just a little, shell I say peaved, on the missing black shield. Personally I think they may have be duped into a sales pitch from their supplier as to what they would recieve, and had never checked the product as this person had to go check their kits to see what I was talking. Another rant I guess. I don't mention names - just coveate -emptor.

Hmmm, looked at the website and yes, it does look black to me too! It's definitely not a reflection.

It does look like a reflection to me. If you look at all the pictures on their website, the black mark on the clip looks different in each picture (I don't have the catalog, so I can't say what it looks like there). But if you don't like it, did you ask for your money back. They have been very easy to deal with in my experiences with them.

I have a few of these component sets, and I like them. I really like the fact that they are are not a posted pen, and show off more of the pen material. I think it's a nice alternative to the Jr Gent 1, and a good entry level rollerball.

Ok, I see. The "shield" is a reflection. The top finial is what I thought was the deception. But I see now that the shield is a reflection. Oh definitely I use Woodturningz all the time. Great service and fast shipping.

Yes, I order from them alot, and will continue to order from them on items as I need them. Their service is really great. I talked to them about the ad and the reflection answer did not fit well with me. BUT that was only one item. So I continued given them my order for the other goodies. Within three hours after giving them my order I received an e-mail that my order was shipped. Now, that is what I call service. So I continue to order from them on things I like. I usually order one or two of an item to see if I like it. If I don't like it I just don't order any more of the same item. I never return or ask for my money back. It just cost to much for me and them.

Looking at this it is deceiving, but it is a reflection. Often times when photographing highly reflective things, they will use what they call skrims, small pieces of material, white, black, sometimes colors, to put in place out of the frame that show in these reflections. This particular reflection is very well defined, and solid black, which makes it appear like the black acrylic or paint we sometimes see on the clips. Had they used a medium grey piece instead of solid black, it probably would have looked more realistic. The skrim they put in is also the cause of the black line down the nib section, and helps define the round shape there...

I've been eyeballing that kit since they first released it. Never once did I ever think that was anything other than a reflection. I didn't even think of a shield until this thread.

Maybe that's due to the fact that i took a photography class in hs and learned about glare.

Like the other poster said it's pretty obvious when looking at other pics of the kit.

I know this is an old thread, but I need to know if this uses the same bushings as a Jr Gent/caballero. Someone donated us a kit for the Center for the Blind.

I think I can make the Jr Gent bushings work. The orion is the same size on both ends of the lower barrel, where the Jr Gent is slightly tapered. I think if I turn one end down to the larger Jr gent bushing and then reverse it on the mandrel and turn the other end to the larger bushing size as well I can make it work. The cap bushings are the same on both pens.

See now that is thinking. Where there is a will there is a way.

Sharon, Good idea!
You can also turn your own bushing from some hardwood or Corian. Since you only need one it should not take long.
I would CA the bushing make it more durable. !f some of the CA gets sanded off, just add some more and check with calipers.

If we had more than one kit to turn, I would make the bushings, but since we have just the one kit that was donated to us, I think I will just use the Jr Gent bushings. I actually have two Jr Gent bushing sets, so I can just use the two biggest lower barrel bushings from both sets. The Jr Gent is .483" and the orion is .485" so I think it will work ok. Tube size is the same on both.
