HI. My name is Jeffery Thomas. I just joined today. I read alot about appling a CA finish over decals (and pens). I was at Woodcraft an noticed a bottle that looked like CA but said "Wood finisher". Is this what you use or do you use regular CA? Seems like the regular would dry too fast. Sorry this is so long but I have been trying to research this on my own.

Jeff, there are many more members who are way more experienced than me. There is also tutorials in the library, but my 2 cents is: put a couple of coats of CA on your pen. Micromesh it down to a shiny smoothness. Apply the waterslide decal. Let it dry. Then put a few more coats of CA on then micromesh it again to a smooth shine.

Jimm1 is correct. I put about 4 coats of CA then mm smooth. Put the decal on then let dry overnight. Then apply about 8 to 10 coats of CA. Here is a pic of one I did.

+1 on Randall's description. That is exactly what I do. Make sure you let it sit overnight to 24 hours. The decal absolutely must be 100% dry before you can apply additional coats of CA otherwise it may side off when you apply the CA -- DAMHIKT:eek::eek:

I understand the waiting part. Just still a novice on the whole CA thing. CA is like pen kits- different names for the same thing. When you say put CA the decal are you talking about this stuff (see picture) or is this just for "a CA finish" on barewood?

Jeffery,
I know this is a couple months away, but the Richmond Pen group will be sponsoring the Mid Atlantic Pen Group event on May 17 and 18 at the WoodCraft store in Richmond. We will have a session on various finishing processes; one will be CA finishing. There is also a pen turner from Ohio that is expert on CA decal finishing, who will be at this event.
Check out our Web Site at Midatlanticpen.com We have some great demonstrators, and vendors, and their demo's/products are listed on our site.
PM me if you want more information.

That's the stuff. Use the thin and apply softly, don't press too hard. If you don't seal the decal with spray lacquer (water based or solvent based) and let that dry for at least an hour or two, you will smear the ink. This is true if you're using an ink jet rather than a laser.

Like Wood Butcher mentioned. I use KRYLON Crystal Clear Acrylic from Walmart to seal my decals. I use paper from decalpaper.com in my inkjet printer.
