Need help figuring this one out.

Can any one explain why or how this happened? I was drilling on the lathe and as I turned the hand wheel it snapped off in my hand. Luckily the company is sending me a new hand wheel free of charge, but I would like to ensure this doesn't happen in the future. So has this happened to anyone else or does any one have an idea that might have caused it.

My lathe is a shop fox 1704.

Your lucky that your getting another one from the company, I had the identical part to this one break one of my lathes. I couldn't find the piece anywhere, definitely not from the store where I purchased it. Then not to long after giving up the search, I got one off of the classified ads on IAP. It works a whole lot better then the old slip-joint pliers did, and I'm very pleased to have it fixed. You have to treat them with care, some of these parts are made of cast, and some are made of ABS plastic, I know because I've owned both.

I do not think they've improved the design at all. Looks like a bad casting. I've had that same machine for 5 yrs and the customer service was amazing for this machine. Never had a single problem denied while on warranty, even after 3 motors and controllers. An inexpensive machine that will take a lot of abuse.
 
Just a thought...how much force are you using when you install the drill chuck or other mt accessories? When you remove them do you have a hard time getting them to "pop" out? If so then that might be part of the problem, it doesn't take much to properly seat a clean mt.

:eek: Rick that might be it. When I first got my lathe I use to slam my MT accessories in to the MT to make sure it was seated. It wasn't till I found IAP and the YouTube videos that noticed I was the only on doing that. I stopped doing it a little over a year ago now, only been turning for two, but I guess it did its damage. Also, when I was taking the remainder of the handle out I noticed that I was missing a take down screw. That might have caused enough vibration for the other screw to slowly chip away at things. hmm I wonder, maybe a combination. Well i know better now.
