I'm ready to buy a new parting tool and want a 1/16". I'm leaning toward the Ashley Isles one from CSUSA. Anybody have any thoughts about narrow parting tools or that one in particular?

I have one of the rectangular ones from PSI (they call it a tenoning tool), and am pleased with it.

I have the Sorby HSS tool but I would make one now. Don Derry makes one out of a bandsaw blade (http://www.fulmerwoodworking.com/tools/tools-hollowing.html). His theory is that a 1/16" high speed steel blade is a bomb waiting to explode. That thought is more for bowl work rather than pens but his point is that bandsaw steel is meant to bend in case it gets caught in the wood. Good idea.

Like Frank, I just kept dipping it in water to keep it cool. To truly temper it I would have used oil, but I think it's stainless so I just used water. Only sharpened it once since grinding, and used it quite a few times on a number of materials. Even if I had to resharpen once a week it would be worth it. I have 5 more so they'll probably last me a while.
