I am always amazed at how that place can sell finished products for cheaper than we can buy the wood to make them!

I have a few of these. The olive ones have made a few really great pens. In my experience, they are full of cracks, particularly at the dark grained heart wood. Surface cracks have been filled and I didn't notice at first. A bit of strategy in cutting it up will yield nice results. The 1st and 4th ones are really nice.
I bought an Acacia board and made some pens. They weren't very exciting. That wood is mostly being used as stops and clamps on my jigs.
Beware: I nearly bought one that had terrific grain color pattern…it took me several minutes and close examination to realize it was water color paint on the surface of an acacia board.

My plan for these is to use them for cheese slicing boards.
Last year I sold 6 of the olive wood as such just by adding the cheese slicing hardware for $50., and they were usually the first ones to go.

I too had gifts from Home Goods. My wife shopped for highly figured olive wood and scored four very useful boards. After carefully cutting them I have really pretty exhibition quality blanks. There are a few voids, but I get the same voids when buying from a commercial vendor.

Just picked up 4 more today. One has several cracks I'll need to fill with something or I'll just cut it up for pen blanks.
