Just picked up these 5 olive wood and 2 acaia boards at Home Goods this evening for $81. Didn’t catch the crack in one board until I got home. I’ll probably cut that one up for pen blanks.

I have a few of these. The olive ones have made a few really great pens. In my experience, they are full of cracks, particularly at the dark grained heart wood. Surface cracks have been filled and I didn’t notice at first. A bit of strategy in cutting it up will yield nice results. The 1st and 4th ones are really nice.

I bought an Acacia board and made some pens. They weren’t very exciting. That wood is mostly being used as stops and clamps on my jigs.

Beware: I nearly bought one that had terrific grain color pattern…it took me several minutes and close examination to realize it was water color paint on the surface of an acacia board.

I too had gifts from Home Goods. My wife shopped for highly figured olive wood and scored four very useful boards. After carefully cutting them I have really pretty exhibition quality blanks. There are a few voids, but I get the same voids when buying from a commercial vendor.

Thanks for the tip Monty.

Just picked up 4 more today. One has several cracks I’ll need to fill with something or I’ll just cut it up for pen blanks.
