Hello there Good Folks
After the drama of Covid and TB (et Al) have got down to finishing some Pens
However, making a few of these SLIM LINES and am up against the Wall
Drilled the Blank normal 7mm at the top Tube
And Drilled the Blank at the Lower Tube at 6.9mm
Worked like magic for some woods.
But our Local TAMBUTI and Imported ZIRICOTE is really giving me beans even after having drilled them at 7.0mm
Methinks they are absorbing moisture very rapidly. We are on the Coast and 6-8 Kms from the Ocean
Tried applying SADDLER's BEESWAX to no avail
Been even thinking of trying GREASE - hesitant, a bit far fetched though !!!
Has anybody experienced the same ???
And what method or application solved the Problemo !!!
Would be good to know as we don't wanna discard that Beautiful Wood
Attached are some pics of these SLIM LINES
Thanks in advance, even if U have read thus Far !!!

Don't know what "giving me beans" means. But I drill all the way through the blank with a 7mm drillbit. Could you provide more info.

Have you tried re-drilling at 7.0 a couple days after initial drilling ? The initial drilling will generate some heat and slightly dry out the blank , leading to re-absorption of moisture under your humid conditions , as you suggest . Re-drilling won`t remove much material so heating and drying should be negligible .

Beautiful finish on those pens .

Hello there
"giving me Beans" = giving me headaches, (PIA), pain in the Butt, frustrating problems
Dunno about more info ??!!! What more may I say ??? My Drilling procedure is as mentioned above
To reiterate, The TOP part of the BLANK is Drilled 7.0mm
The LOWER TIP Section was Drilled 6.90mm and later again at 7.0 mm
Hope this provides the right info
TIA

Hello there WAYNE
Thanks for the response and encouragement
Yes, Sir. Did exactly that. Re-Drilled at 7.0mm - no Dice !!! No Change.
Quite frustrating. Now at an impasse !!!
Don't wanna go beyond that golden-mean 7.0mm

At some point , after I don`t know how many repeats , the fibers that are causing your problem , should (I think) be removed by drilling . Might be worth trying a hand powered tool . Not sure about S African terminology , but here they would be called a rat tail file or a round bastard file , usually available in 1/4 and 1/2 inch sizes .

You could try taking a smaller dowel and attaching some sandpaper to it leaving a flap of sandpaper. Insert it in a drill and go in and out .

That's a good suggestion I didn't think about
However, methinks that Bastard would be a little too coarse for that small delicate Opening
Got a Second Cut Round which I could use very gently
Thanks for the idea and other option
Will let U know how it went

That's another good option
But definitely not with a Power Drill. That will be a little too aggressive, methinks
Doing it manually yet very slowly and most carefully might just do the trick
Wayne has given us the File idea
Let me try the clinical manoeuvre first and see how it goes
Will let U Guys know
Thanks

Power drill definitely. It won't take off much.

Hello there Guys
Did promise to get back to Ya Folks
Managed to resolve our own problem rather simply
Held the original 6.9mm Drill Bit in the Vise, carefully, yet very slowly inserted the Blank in the Drill Bit, whilst gently Rotating the Blank and ensuring that the front 10-15mms was very gradually opened up to ease the tightness.
Don't ask me how I know all this has to be done "very Gradually and Gently"
"Tis all garnered from the "School of Hard Knocks" !!!
Yes. Indeed. Experience is THE Best teacher
Hope this closes the Chapter on these MOD SLIM LINES and it would at least assist some one with similar issues
Thanks a Zillion to all Ya Great Guys who took time to respond and make positive contributions endeavouring to resolve our quandary
LORD Bless
