Picked up a little turning wood today.. this is from a local Methodist church in Madisonville.. I could only get these four pieces.. I had to leave one piece that was at least 30 - 40 in. diameter.. it was where a bunch of limbs joined the main trunk. The tree fell last fall in a windstorm and lay in the church yard for a few months... they finally cut it up and I got permission to pick up some. I'm not real good at identifying wood from the barks and grains.. I think I remember thinking the leaves looked like Maple.. back in Oct when I first saw the tree...
the tree was old and a lot of lichen growing on the bark.

The color on the wood is distorted.. I've already painted the end with a sealer to slow down the checking..

Any ideas and help appreciated.

Part of my confusion is that this wood doesn't look like the other wood that I've been told is also maple.. this is from a tree that fell in my back yard and I cut up last spring. This was some hard wood to cut..

Hey Fred, come on down.... I left a BIG piece that wouldn't fit in my truck (Actually, I couldn't move it by myself... it's still there.

Dario,
all of the oak leaves are on my property... there's an oak about 25-30 in. dia. at the corner of my shop.. all of the new wood is stacked under the oak.

Some of that has the look of cherry, but the lichen is too thick to see if the bark is shiny. The spalted part is a mystery, as it's whitish. I'm going to have to go with oak too though. Look at your oak and see if the bark is similar.
