I have a Jet 1014 with the PSI variable speed conversion. I've noticed lately that the head stock gets rather hot during turning at higher speeds. Almost to the point that it's uncomfortable to touch the dead center or threads and you can feel it through the body of the head as well.

Is this a warning that the bearing may be starting to have issues? I haven't noticed this in the past.

Bearings will handle quite a bit of heat --- BUT my jet 1014 VS does not run hot.

Classic causes are belt alignment is off and you are getting extra friction, the sheeves set screw has come loose and moved, or your bearings are heading towards retirement.

Check the alignment issues and get replacement bearings ready.

When mine was getting hot like you describe, my shaft was spinning inside of the inner race of the outside bearing (hand wheel side) of the head stock. I ended up making 3 prick marks on the shaft so that it fit tight inside the bearing race. That solved my problem.

My 1220 had a similar problem. I loosened the set screw, dialed out the handwheel, and tightened the set screws, again. No overheating since. If that doesn't do it, run down the other suggestions--probably bearing time.
Good luck

I backed out the hand wheel just slightly today. Still gets pretty warm, but not quite as bad. I've also been noticing a slight ticking/scraping type sound. Think I'll start getting a set of bearings ready just in case.

Thanks for the suggestions and links all!

stay away from the jet parts they will fail in a short time.i was going thru them every six ti eight months. i found a local shop the sold bearings a got the best one he had its been 3 years now a still good. the cost was 6$ more the getting them from jet.
