For some reason I stoped turning pens about 5 years ago.

I recently tried to sale some of the pens I had to help pay for our upcoming adoption.
I did sale some and had a request for a custom job. I did the pens and rediscoverd how fun it is!

One of the bigest pain I remember was finishing pens. I hated CA and the other just did last.

But now I've discovered WTF (Wood Turner Finish) and my heat gun! WOW!

I can build up the finish in no time. It's hard as hell! Sand down with MM. Voila! Eye candy.

The best is no fumes, no fingers glues together.

Pen turning is fun again!!!

welcome back, good luck with the adoption.

Could you explain the process of your finish.

I like the CA finish but also hate the finger sticking to paper towels.

I apply WTF with a small artist brush on the blanks turning at about 2000rpm. I also hit the blank with my heatgun on the low setting to dry the WTF. I do this as often as I feel I need.
When I'm done, I just sand like I would on a CA finish.

Most of the time I can start my sanding/bolishing process with the 4000 MM.

So 4000, 6000, 8000, 12000 and I finish of with conservator wax.

Joy!

Now time will tell how it will last?

The great part is that I can decide if I want to fill the wood (I build up a little finish then sand it back down to the wood) or keep the wood look. And my process dosent really change.

I like it alot, even more now that my 9 year old son is showing interest in pen turning. He could even do this easy finish. (I don't want him to start squirting CA around!)

I might do a Youtube video on it? (If I have time?)

Welcome back, I understand about the CA finish, I did not last very long with it. I personally like the Enduro Finish, I know it takes time, and I have the time to spend to be satisfied!!

Now we know what you did for those 5 years. Raising a child fills up most of the free time.

Welcome back.

Happy Turning

Tom

That and the fact that I'm also involved in electronics. I'm really into guitar effects building. I've also introduced my kid to electronics. Got him soldering and he is good at it. Spent the last couple of months building analog synts with him.

So many interesting things to do and discover.........but only 24h in a day!!!
