I'm amazed at how this LiLac came out!

Lilac Seam Rippers! The bottom 2 in the pictures have CA finish the rest Dr's Woodshop Pen's Plus. The smell from cutting, drilling and turning was just amazing! This wood turned so smoothly it made the fun job at the lathe 2x the pleasure!

A few of them had small cracks that Lilac is known to have but were filled with CA and fine Lilac shavings.

Someone gave me this LiLac as a gift and I only have probably 8 more of these blanks. Where have people purchased Lilac blanks / wood from?

Lilac is generally a small shrub that grows in the northern half of the USA. Your best bet will probably be to try to find someone who has been able to harvest some & try to work a deal with them. You might post a wanted request in the Deals, Trades, Gifts & Wants forum in case someone here might have some.

I have seen lilac pen blanks on ebay from time to time, but I don't see any there right now.

See if you can get hooked up with two or three landscape companies who regularly pull out old shrubbery. You will need to make them a pen or two!
You may get some other good species as well. Just be sure to try the blanks and let them acclimate to help reduce the splitting. I would cut your blanks a little large and put them in a paper bag on the shelf. Date them and then start pulling from the earliest batch.

I get mine when I prune my trees. Even with anchor seal immediately they have a high split rate.

I was just informed last night that the lady who gifted me this lilac will be shipping me 2 Large Flat Rate Boxes more of Lilac in trade for 7 pens made from that material.

They send the lilac still in branch form just cut enough to fit inside the box.

I think for the 7 pen trade I won't be doing fountain or rollerball....

Any suggestions as to what kits I should make the 7 pens from? I'd like to stay away from slimlines. between $4-$9


The first box she send I was able to cut out of the branches.

16 AAA lilac (no cracks, amazing color variation (purple and maroon and white))
20 AA Lilac (minor fill-able cracks but still with Amazing color variations (purple and maroon and white ))
14 A Lilac (no cracks, but no red or purple, white and tan grains)
8 Bottle stopper blanks with minimal cracks

16 AAA slimline blanks (1/2 x 1/2 x 5.25)
