Hello, all

I've been lurking around the forums for a few months now, admiring & reading about the work that you guys & gals do; figured it was time to formally introduce myself.

I'm Steven; a software engineer by trade but have been turning periodically for the last couple of years. I'm also a fountain pen collector with a relatively small collection (it's not an addiction yet), and I enjoy making pens probably more than anything else I've turned (lamps [also a former electrician], bowls, spindles for modular projects, etc). I haven't graduated to kitless, though I wish I had started there, but I'm working my way in that direction.

My wife & I live in Nebraska and we love checking out craft shows, so you'll more than likely see us within the next year if any of you folks are ever around the Eastern state border.

Pleasure to meet all of you. It's been great to find a group that shares the passion.

Greetings from Columbus Steven! I sort of came out of the software engineering world myself as it evolved over the past 40 years or so. I started out as a machine controls design engineer working mostly with Mostek, Zilog, and Motorola microprocessors at the assembly language level - then via C cross compilers, etc. Welcome to the IAP community. Perhaps our paths will cross one of these days. Are you a baseball fan? - Dave

Assembly! I'm scared to ask how long ago that was 😋 I have a lot of microcontrollers & repos in C lying around but haven't touched assembly since college. These days, I mostly maintain a home Linux server that hosts a suite of apps we use around the house.

Alas, I am not. We like catching an occasional combat sport, though!

Well, I started in about 1981. Even microprocessors were fairly new and most of the High Schools were getting some Apple II computers. Since the burden of learning (and teaching) about them usually fell on the Math or Science teacher, I developed and taught a night course in Microprocessors in Education especially for them. I had about 60 "students" from high schools all across the state - I think the farthest even drove in once a week from Rapid City. A few years later I decided to go for a Master's degree at Iowa State, but a job opportunity in industry presented itself at about the same time for someone to replace the gears and sprockets in some winding equipment with servo motors and digital controls, so I opted for making money doing what I enjoyed rather than borrowing money to go back to school. It was a good decision as the job turned into a 34 year career in Equipment Engineering and Process Engineering. I retired in 2020 as the Director of Engineering for the Dale Resistors Division of Vishay. - Dave

Welcome from MS.

I haven't graduated to kitless yet either, although I have quite a bit to the tools used in making Kitless custom pens. I was surprised a few weeks ago when I was on "Turners Warehouse" and found they had a "Kitless pen makers starter pack"

Maybe that will whet your appetite! 🙂
