I have just bought an I/R (infra red) remote for my D/C system and was wondering if anyone on here has some experience with I/R remotes. I am not happy with the range or signal that I am getting with this and would like to know if there is anyway of extending it.:frown::frown::frown:

distance isn't usually an issue.. I'd wonder if something is blocking the
beam .. scratched or fogged lens? If it doesn't look good, try cleaning
with water first, then if it's scratch you might try some plastic polish.
Try pointing it into your digital camera to see if it works. Could be low
batteries. Just some ideas..

Define range? I/R can be drastically affected by sunlight as well as other conditions.

There is extension options out there.. here is one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882145062

The best thing about these extenders is you don't need line of sight. You point the remote at the receiver and the transmitter goes on the other end. The extender works with radio frequency, not light and thus can go around corners, walls etc.

Well I mounted it in the DC room to start with then after it didn't work said to my self, duh it's I/R and it needs to see it. So then put it up in the shop, and its 25x30 ft , unless I am almost infront of it with the remote it will not come on. No scatches it brand new.

Now please do not tar and feather me for this, but are you sure you are pointing the right end at the receiver? I know it has been mentioned alredy, but try changing out the batteries. Remotes with DOA dry cells are famous.

Mine works anywhere in the shop unless it ia sitting down on a metal surface when I try to use it. If I lift it from the surface slightly, works like a champ!

I would try batteries also...

Also in most IR remotes the IR LED is only held in by it's two electrical leads. Sometimes thru a hiccup in manufacturing the LED ends up pointed off in left field somewhere. That said you might want to really scrutinize the LED to make sure it's pointed straight out the end of the remote. Usually an IR signal will bounce around, but not always.

If you have a digital camera handy, try pointing the remote towards the
lens as you watch through the camera. You'll be able to tell whether the
problem is on the emitter or the detector side, at least..

(Keep in mind this doesn't work on DSLRs that don't have live viewing on the LCD. Point & Shoot cameras are fine. Or take a long exposure photo with the DSLR while shooting the remote at the camera.)

ouch .. I've been drooling over an S3 Pro that someone is offering
for $300. (last time I checked it was around $2500) and it only
has about 500 clicks on it. I think that's based on the D80 too.
Why wasn't I born rich instead of handsome?

That's a nice price.

This reminds me... One of the things I'd love to do is get a thermal image of a resin blank being turned. Using different gouges/skews, sharpened in different manners, etc. See just what tools an techniques heat the blank the most while turning.

I just wish I could afford a FLIR...
