The blade is 1095 carbon steel. The dark line is where the steel was differentially heat treated (called a Hamon). Below the line to the cutting edge the steel is harder.

How did you engrave your name on the blade ? ... laser or ?

How did you engrave your name on the blade ? ... laser or ?

The makers mark was put in with a process called electro-chemical etching. It uses a stencil, some mild chemicals, and electrical current.
