Hi everyone! New to turning, but have been lurking around here for a few weeks. Got a cheap lathe off CL and have turned 3 pens so far. Unfortunately, while they Look very good, they are out of round a bit. Trying to pinpoint the wobble on the lathe, but no success so far... anywho, I have learned a lot from everyone here, and look forward to learning more. Just thought it was about time to introduce myself. Anyone know of a pen turning group on the Portland area? I would love to meet others in the area. Thanks!

Welcome from Alaska!!

I've had trouble with some of my pens being out of round. One thing is to make sure that your locking nut isn't too tight, it can cause to much pressure on the mandrel, thus creating pens out of whack. Other than that, make sure to keep your tools really sharp. Good luck!!

Glad you are here. I gotta say though, I have lived in WA all my life and never knew there was a Portland, WA.

There is a Northwest Pen Turners Assoc. /wood Craftsmen Online (PNPTA) website you should check out also. It is a subset of members from here.

Glad to know you've been able to work out the alignment on your lathe. That was one of the first things I had to deal with . . . it's alot easier when you understand what to do.

I'm putting a few links in here for reference –
This link has postings by different pen turners on what they wish they had known earlier:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46654

This link tells of some "out of the box" tools/aids for pen turners http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66178

This one is a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't. http://content.penturners.org/articl...9/Acronyms.pdf
