My Jet 1014vs has become pretty much unusable; it stalls out with even the slightest amount of resistance. It figures this happens when I have 6 peppermills and a dozen ornaments to make before christmas.

I was starting to drill the 1 5/8" recess in the bottom of a peppermill and it stalls as soon as I touch the bit to the wood. I had noticed the lathe slowing slightly as I was roughing the peppermill blanks but it did not stop then. The forstner bit is sharp and I touched it up just to be sure. The lathe is set at the max speed for the bit or I'd turn it up higher to get more torque. I have turned and drilled peppermills in the same way on this lathe before but now I can't even get the hole started.

I am going to call Jet on Monday but has anyone else here experienced this and/or fixed it? I read about problems with capacitors but since this is a VS with a DC motor, there aren't any capacitors. The brushes look fine. I'm leaning toward a problem with the controller or the motor is shot.

I'd like to have an idea what's going on before I call. Thanks in advance for any help.

You checked all the obvious stuff right? Belt tension, pulley secure and so on. I turned on a 1014VSI for a couple of years and never had that issue.

Only power issues I have encountered are with belt in high speed mode and trying to have the speed control very low. check to be sure you are on the low speed pulley and the belt is tight.

Open the pulley doors and watch what happens when it stalls. Does the motor actually stop? Does the motor continue but the lower wheel stop? Does the lower wheel continue but the belt stop? Etc all they way up to the spindle.

If the motor itself stops you can either find an electric motor repair shop in your area or call Jet service for other ideas.

I have had that lathe for 3 or more years now. I'm on my 5th or 6th switch. While the switch is going bad the lathe stalls. I can mess with the switch and get it going again, but I know from the symptoms it is the switch going bad. You can get a replacement one at any lowes, etc. Just take ours out and take it with you to the store.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have already changed the switch a couple years ago. I got the Dust/moisture resistant one and haven't had any problems since.

I'll check each component again as it stalls. Hopefully it's something simple or me being absent minded.

Sounds to me like the capacitor of the motor is bad. Does the motor come up to speed??? Does it go through its speed ranges easily being a VS??

My 1014 vsi had a 5 year warranty. I'd check with Jet. It may very well be a warranty repair.

I checked everything again and I don't think I had the belt tight enough. I usually tension with just the weight of the motor to not stress the bearings but the belt would slip while to motor kept turning when I advanced the bit. I tightened the belt a little and it works now. I have a feeling the belt is starting to wear and slip some (it's the original belt) so I'll replace that as soon as I can get a new one.

I sure am glad it wasn't something more serious. Thanks for everyone's help.
