My Jet 1014vs has become pretty much unusable; it stalls out with even the slightest amount of resistance. It figures this happens when I have 6 peppermills and a dozen ornaments to make before christmas.
I was starting to drill the 1 5/8" recess in the bottom of a peppermill and it stalls as soon as I touch the bit to the wood. I had noticed the lathe slowing slightly as I was roughing the peppermill blanks but it did not stop then. The forstner bit is sharp and I touched it up just to be sure. The lathe is set at the max speed for the bit or I'd turn it up higher to get more torque. I have turned and drilled peppermills in the same way on this lathe before but now I can't even get the hole started.
I am going to call Jet on Monday but has anyone else here experienced this and/or fixed it? I read about problems with capacitors but since this is a VS with a DC motor, there aren't any capacitors. The brushes look fine. I'm leaning toward a problem with the controller or the motor is shot.
I'd like to have an idea what's going on before I call. Thanks in advance for any help.
