I am new to the site, but have been making pens for about four years. I have discovered that the more I learn about woodturning, the less I really know. There is always so much more to learn. I am retired from the US Army, and make pens for fun and/or gifts. My name is Don.

Welcome aboard, Don. There are a few penturners in the Waxhaw Woodturners club who would be happy to help you with anything you might need and to gain insights from your experiences. We meet at the McDowell Arts Center in Matthews on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM.

Welcome Don to IAP. I've been here 20 years and still learning, but I'm not able to do as much as I would like.

Join in the fun and post some of your work; ask questions, tell us your methods that work for you! For every member here there are at least 3 ways of doing most things! 😁

Don; Knowledge is like a balloon, the inside of the balloon is your knowledge. As you blow into the balloon your knowledge expands. The surface of the balloon is how much you still have to learn and the things you have yet to learn. It is a never ending cycle. The more you know, the more your see how much you don't know.

Welcome to the group from NJ! I second something already said - find a local AAW turning chapter near you and join! We need more penturners in the AAW and you will learn a lot about turning in general through the members.

AS Kevin said; This is the link to the chapter list.

After searching you must scroll down to see the results of the search. This is a pet peeve of mine. Poor design. Results should appear on screen, NOT below the bottom of the screen!
Randy - AGREED (in caps on purpose). The organization is incredible for assistance and instruction - the website, not so much. I've had a lot of discussions with them, including a run for a seat on the AAW board, to see if we could get better at this. The big issue is there is so much info there with a really wide level of skill sets in the users, combined with the high cost of a rewrite, makes it a really complex re-do. They acknowledge the issues and things will slowly change (fingers crossed!).

But - I believe that there is a ton of value in AAW membership and joining local chapters. Hand craft skills are declining in every area, not just turners, so I am always pleased when someone new takes up the craft! I think the activity here on the IAP is also a great plus - there are amazing turners here, with most of them willing to share and offer kind words to people as they build their skills.

Welcome again Don!
