But, I got an order for a pen, from the exotics site. Gentleman saw casein and decided he needed a pen with a certain rollerball refill that he liked. Asked if I could make it. His refill and his taste dictated the length. The components come from more than one type "kit"

I was intrigued the first time I saw a casein pen and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite materials. Hope exotics can keep this in stock. A beauty.
 
I think it would look more interesting with a piece of black acrylic added to the closed end. But, I was just the mechanic here, the customer KNEW what he wanted.

I'm not complaining, it IS a pretty pen. Will be interesting to see how durable it is.
 
Dawn sent me one and I tried it on a Jr Emperor. First casein, first Jr E.
I feel like it should go right next to my rosary beads, except I don't want
the pen to be lost ,too.

I plan on ordering more of this, that's certain

Mr Beall can take credit for the finish. I did work on it a while, the scratches did not want to come out (1000 grit). But, I really wanted a top-shelf result---personal pride thing---- and the gentleman looks like he could refer some business to me. So, I kept buffing until I could not see scratches any more!!

Casein CAN shine!!

I'm not kidding when I say it took a while. Three separate sessions, maybe two minutes each. But, had I stayed there for longer, I would have put too much pressure on it and it would have gotten hot, then, who knows???

I did NOT want to blow this one! (Sold all my casein, one try and you're OUT!!)
 
You know .. this is tickling my brain .. I didn't polish that long. I got a nice
sheen to it, but later when I looked there were some ridges. I know those
weren't there. And I sanded and polished again, but I didn't want to push
it either. I wonder if the ridges were heat related? I might have overheated
it when sanding or polishing..
 
Charlie, so far the three I made have polised up nicely. I WET sanded with MM to 12000, then brasso,Mequires plastic scratch remover ,Mequires plastic polish and a coat of TSW.... No buffing !!!!!!! on my slow speed buffer....just didn't seem to need it......

I am AFRAID of water and casein. I have read it is water soluble. NOW, I have not MADE pens, in any number, because I have not been able to get a steady supply.

When the next shipment comes, looks like I may get a reasonable amount, in which case I will put a small piece in water and watch for a while. We'll learn something!!

For now, I am VERY patient, with my LAST piece!!
 
LOL don't blame you about being patient.. I love the stuff.

I was afraid to wet sand, because I've read that it is water soluble, too.
But I read that here.
I've read in other places that it's not water soluble, but keep it away from
alkalines. So I don't know if there's different versions .. maybe it's only the
un-stabilized or un-preserved casein that is water soluble?

Anyway.. I dry sanded. Next time it's wet micromesh..

Edit: .. come to think of it, when the acid is added to the milk,
the water is forced out. This leaves the casein. So .. I would
think it would not be water soluble. Just a thought. We'll see
what your experiment shows

Ed, here is a link that might interest you. I have had a sliver of casein in water for over a week before I wet sanded with no problems. As it was first used for buttons and I'm sure that some washing of the clothing took place I'm thinking that the casein would have to be immersed for an extended period of time.

Were you trying to get the blue out? Is it taken under fluorescent lights?
