I added the color fill. I wanted it to be subtle, so it didn't over power the beauty of the wood. I wanted it to just stand out, so I used a glaze and added a few more coats of poly for protection.

It will be put on display tomorrow.

There is going to be a series of these, a "boxed zoo"?

Awesome box. Just saw a short video on Wilstem Ranch (or Farm?) in southern Indiana that has both some up-close giraffe opportunities and the chance to help bathe a few elephants. Thinking of surprising my bride this fall--bit of a different anniversary trip!!

Thanks for the comments.

This particular piece of lumber was a full 1" thick, and 10' long. I only cut a 26" piece off and then re-sawed it in half.
So I still have an almost 8' full thickness piece, and the 26" x 1/2" thick piece left.

I'm going to save it for a project that will show the full, unobstructed beauty of the figure. I might slice a 3/4" piece from the end and see how it looks on a pen, if I can get ahold of a nice kit, without the high shipping cost for one kit.
